Naturally mined diamonds have a large carbon footprint and often harm local ecosystems. Although conflict-free diamonds that comply the Kimberley Process Certification are the rule it’s not always possible to control every step of the process. The diamond world is committed to be more transparant and does everything to exclude high-risk territories, yet lab grown diamonds are the only diamonds that are 100% harmless.
Cultured diamonds – that grow in a controlled laboratory – offer a socially responsible option to diamond lovers. With a Vow diamond you pledge your devotion twice: to the one you love but also to future generations by giving them the necessary resources to live.
In nature it takes billions of years and extreme pressure and heat to grow a geological diamond. The natural resources of diamonds are also exhausting increasingly and it becomes more difficult – and dangerous – to mine diamonds.
Luckily laboratory professionals have developed advanced technologies that duplicate the conditions beneath the earth’s crust. They plant a small diamond seed – found in nature – in a controlled environment where the magic happens. The process is more sustainable, faster and less expensive than harvesting geological diamonds yet still complex.
With geological diamonds more than 50% of the carat weight gets lost during the cutting process because they grow in irregular shapes. Lab created diamonds on the other hand have a more regular shape and are perfect for a more efficient cut: they can be cut to an ideal standard which is only preserved for 5% of mined diamonds.
Although they are grown in a laboratory, they still need to go through the same cutting process as mined diamonds. Cultured diamonds hold the same grading standards and their carat, cut, colour and clarity are valued by professional gemologists. Every Vow diamond we offer is classified as type IIa, which is the purest and rarest grade of all.
